What's the first major news story you remember as a child?
The Challenger explosion. I remember watching the footage on the little B&W TV that only came out of the closet for space shuttle launches and presidential speeches.

At school 3 days later, we had an outdoor assembly around the flag pole.
I didn't really understand, but the grownups were teary and quiet and that was not at all typical.
