I would LOVE to see that painting. There's been a long campaign to actually have it moved to Guernica and if they do, it would be the person reason to visit.
I think it's more to do with commemorating the events that the painting depicts, but Guernica is supposed to be a beautiful town and well worth a visit in its own right.
Yes. I get it. We had a spare day in the Basque last summer and thought about visiting. Went to Vitoria-Gasteiz instead. I couldn’t persuade my family to visit Guernica. Too harrowing a place to end a family vacation. Maybe the Guggenheim in Bilbao would be near enough for the painting?
Guernica is supposed to be a very scenic town. It's quite hard to get to without a car but they have a massive cider/harvest festival every autumn. If you haven't tried Basque cider or cheese, you should. 😀
Yes. Also, if you haven’t spent a little time with Basque people, you should. Both sides of the border. They are fabulous company. I think we’re both fans 👍
Well worth the visit. Another important site to see: Gernikako Arbola (the Tree of Gernika in Basque) is an oak that symbolizes traditional freedoms for the Biscayan ppl. This example is what is left of the "old tree" (1742–1892), re-planted 1811: its trunk held in a templet surrounded by a garden.
That is beautiful. I love the Basque country, its language, history and culture, and this has just been added to my catalogue of Euskal Herria. Thank you.
My Welsh roots mean I'm very drawn towards the traditions of the Basques, celts, etc. They are wonderful people, and their fishermen have great seamanship, and with whom in my rowing community I've raced alongside. // Here by the way is another view of the Gernikako Arbola's old tree...
Saw that recently and was deeply affected. Best commentary I read: the painting looks unfinished as if Picasso got most of the way through and realized he could never fully capture the horror of war so he stopped.
That’s not reality as far as I know, just commentary on the unfinished nature
I remember seeing it and being blown away. I was explaining some of the imagery to my wife and she said I don't like it ( she knew it's significance). About half an hour later I found he reclined on a bench in a room full of Miros. These are stunning she said, they're more abstract than Picasso I
Guernica would be my pick as well. I was lucky enough to see it in the New York Guggenheim back in 1998 or 99 and was blown over by how larger than life it seemed. Made me appreciate what an amazing artist Picasso really was.
