I'm always surprised at how often I talk to hardcore manga readers (in the US) who have no idea who he is. I kinda think here he's a bit of a "cartoonist's cartoonist" here.
Japan—where he has a freakin TV show—is obviously a different deal.
I could see younger manga readers not knowing or being interested in his work. A lot of his stuff that's been licensed is seinen, which is usually aimed at older audiences.
