The most recent @charlottemensuel.bsky.social is serializing a new comic about pivotal Indian table tennis figure T.D. Rangaramanujan (someone I knew nothing about before now) and it's beautiful and amazing.

On March 1, 1946, the National Cartoonists Society was formed. Early membership included Rube Goldberg, Milton Caniff, Joe Shuster, Ernie Bushmiller, Ham Fisher, & more. (Photo from a 1949 meeting, with a growing membership that included Hal Foster & Alex Raymond.)

Jet Dream and her Stunt-Girl Counterspies 1966-1968, 17 issues. American comic book stories created by writer Dick Wood and artist Joe Certa for Gold Key. #actiongirl #adventuregirl #dangergirl spyguysandgals.com/sgShowChar.a...

Just voted for the 2025 Eisners Hall of Fame. Super-tough choices this year, as you could make a case for pretty much everyone on the ballot deserving to be in the HOF. www.comic-con.org/awards/eisne...

Aw yiss... Library hold finally arrived!

Continuously in-print since 1963 for good reason! The Gashlycrumb Tinies by Edward Gorey (Harper Collins) reviewed for your reading pleasure by J Webster Sharp www.tcj.com/reviews/the-...

About to give up on someone we want to invite to CXC <sigh>. Artists/cartoonists, *fer the love of god* have a publically-available email address! (Bonus: also helpful for people who want to hire you for stuff, etc.)

Hahaha I love languages! This French word, "gaufrier," means (I think?) "waffle iron" in English... But here it's being used to describe a six-panel grid on a comics page. Which is absolutely perfect—the panels and gutters are all aligned just like a waffle.

In Palm Springs for Modernism Week. Got a tour of Adam West's former home—which is beautiful. (The Bat symbol projects onto the floor when the sun is in position.)

Last day to apply for CXC is Saturday, y'all! airtable.com/appPEUd4nGEe...

day 103 of making a cow tools every day unless i don't

First three pages.

In-flight reading: saw that this manga just won the 45th Japan Science Fiction Award, so I nabbed vol 1 from the library. The art's not my usual jam, but interesting. Giving it a go!

Just finished reading the Junji Ito how-to/memoir and the afterward reveals that there's a "flipbook" animation in the page margin!

Damn y'all. I think the Columbus library system could use a few more copies of this. Not sure I can wait for these other four randos to get done reading.

The project I've been working on at the Billy is coming together!

Comics and Black Punk panel from CXC 2024! Really looking forward to checking this out. Sadly/ironically, I was too busy doing show stuff to catch it in person.

I've always been a sucker for sharp contrasts in art. As much as I admire the finesse of the Arturo Castillo illustration, the boldness of Hugo Pratt's version wins out for me every time.

Obviously biased, given that Blain is maybe my favorite currently-working cartoonist, but my fave Angoulême purchase is this beatiful art book with scans of selected originals from throughout his career and commentary from him. It's beautiful stuff.

A local *arts organization* that's literally named after a working artist just sent out a newsletter email blast with what I'm assuming is an AI-generated illustration. Wt actual f.

Nevertheless

When I was at OSU, a lecture parallel to mine was on "AI and the Future of Translation/Interpretation." The lecturer was severely out of touch. When I engaged him about entertainment translation he referenced the 25 year old "All Your Base Are Belong to Us" meme as evidence our jobs were secure.

The Black Hole comic strip adaptation from February 10, 1980. By Carl Fallberg & Jack Kirby, it was part of Walt Disney's Treasury of Classic Tales strip.

"Generative AI is not an exciting new tool for artists, nor is it 'democratizing'. Generative AI is just the latest way for rich people to steal our work and sell it back under the guise of convenience." Ben Passmore on IA at TCJ: www.tcj.com/i-would-pote...

Never understood why some people view "where do you get your ideas" as some kinda bizarre unanswerable question. Here's a great, straightforward answer example from Junji Ito.

Custom bound edition of Jack Kirby’s 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY Marvel Comics series (minus the tabloid-sized movie adaptation, though I did include the non-Kirby adaptation of 2010).

Also, don’t snooze on some of these “classic manga” releases — some don’t get reprints and get harder to find as time goes by, especially the later volumes (vol 4 and up) & releases from smaller publishers. Show support early & often — it matters.

Manga readers — we live in amazing times! Manga series we used to just think were never going to get published in English are getting picked up. Ashita no Joe, Legend of Kamui, Fist of the North Star, Rose of Versailles, Neighborhood Story - it’s now up to you to buy & keep buying the entire series

Traveling this weekend... and digging my new travel art supplies roll bag I bought at the Columbus Pen Show a while back.

Man what the heck was going on at Charlton in the 60's??

Dawn's new love interest in Mary Worth is a real charmer. Not sure his being an abject dick is being sufficiently telegraphed to the readers yet /s
