Somebody (s) being a real dick.
How can this be?
A US Embassy and US Consulate always does passport renews, they are sent in the diplomatic pouch to DC actually.
The US now does passport renewals on line, but probably not for children. You upload a digital picture.
Was worried that State Dept personnel had all been fired. Applied for renewal from a consolate in Italy and got the new one in 3 weeks. Good for 10 years. By the time I need to renew again, either maga or I will be finito.
For a long time there have been laws that allow the government to refuse to renew passports, like tax debts, failure to file tax returns, unpaid child support and other specific reasons. The question is whether the reason given was legal (as the law has been written for years) or is it illegal?
Have had new passports issued twice by US Embassies while working abroad. First one issued directly by the Embassy in one day pre 9/11 and second in one week via diplomatic pouch back/forth to DC.
I had similar experience despite my passport being stolen when I found myself(ie, I didn’t have anything to do w it, just happened to be there) in a bar brawl in France and the photo they took showing swelling and bruising.
She’s living in Senegal, went to the embassy to renew passports and was told she could not. Not given a reason. Both she and child were born in the US. Both passports expire in 6 months. She was told she could try again at a later date.
No, it's not that bad. As a US citizen, you can enter the US on an expired US passport. You'll face enhanced screening upon landing and potentially a fine, but they will let you in.
The biggest issue is getting an airline to let you on the plane.
I don’t think it is a policy, the state department is in the process of closing embassies world wide. I think they are just in disarray but I could be wrong if you are in a country Trump considers asshole countries.
US folk living abroad need to obtain a 2nd passport which affords you citizenship of that country - if that means giving up your US citizenship it’s the price you may have to pay for safety and freedom. Try applying for political asylum as returning to the US could be dangerous.Have emergency funds
Today it is now 80 years that the KZ Flossenbürg was liberated. People from around the world are now in the small town to remember the victims and the Soldiers helping them to be free again. 80 years and now we are again discussing about passports and the possibility of free travel. Unbelievable.
This is why part of my family and friends are no longer traveling and leaving the USA. They are afraid, that they are denied reentering the Country. Some have green cards, the others are citizens of the US.
This is one of the many reasons why I (US citizen living in France) and my sister (US citizen living in Germany) are not going to visit the US for any purpose.
My sister was planning to go to a college reunion this summer. Changed her mind a few weeks ago due to everything they're doing in the US, even before this madness.
...it's almost as if you have to wear anti-Trump paraphernalia traveling abroad to avoid guilt by association...thanks to him, the "Ugly American" stereotype has new legs...
Actually, since 2023 the US has been more strict on background checks on passport renewal. Like if ya didn't pay your taxes for example, they won't renew your passport until you pay the gummit their due.
However people who have been abroad 10+ years might be flagged. I think it is informal...
administrative pressure to "bring people back to the motherland." Tin foil hat moment. But The current administration is very very xenophobic and isolationist. Countrary to the country's globalist stance on foreign policy for the past ~ 90 years.
American citizens can only enter the US with a US passport, so if repatriation is the goal it's counterproductive to refuse to renew the passports of American emigrants
If it gets crazier, I may just throw away my American passport and try to become Indonesian. I still have a 5 year work visa here. So maybe it'll be okay.
Just because they’re living in another country doesn’t mean they’re a citizen of that country if their passport isn’t renewed, they can’t travel or operate without identification.
Yeah I'm in the same boat, thankfully I got my passport renewed just last year. But I have been abroad 13 years. I wonder if I go back can I leave again, or just stay outside till the orange clown's life expires. Thank godless that guy's cult of personality can't be replaced.
When Trump dies, I think MAGA will die with him. Who do you think that is part of his inner circle has that much charisma as Trump? (I think he has negative charisma) but to the drooling masses that lick the soles of his platform shoes, who could potentially replace the guy?
Both his kids are morons, I'm gonna guess Baron's also a potential waste of space. And, if you are thinking of Baron, he's barely 19, he'll need to wait the minimum of 16 more years to even be eligible for the presidency. I'm not even sure if MAGA idolizes cokehead #1 or #2.
Perhaps it will end like most autocratic regimes end. A lot of people goin' to the gulag be those replacing them or just straight up gettin' shot for treason.
Clean handed autocrats are rare because autocracy in and of itself encourages corruption.
Also the gilded age Trump wants so badly was a time period where most of Americans were dangerously destitute. And the wealthy were impossibly wealthy. like 1/4 of a trillion bucks rich would be the small guy...
Singapore, the Turkey just after the collapse of the the Ottomon Empire, Saladin are 3 such examples of leaders ruling an autocracy that didn't abuse their power. There are maybe a few others. But they would be debatable, Like Fidel Castro or Francisco Franco. Depends on which history book you read.
This is totally outrageous and a huge inconvenience. I would contact a news agency, my congressman back in the States, and request a letter of refusal from the embassy. Americans are expected to pay their taxes regardless of where they live and/or work in the world. Here's a reason to stop.
If they are dual citizens, that might be a factor. It has never been in the past, but under the xenophobic Trump policies, it might mean to them that dual citizens are "real" Americans.
It absolutely has been a problem in the past, but not so much for the last 50-60 years. And with an administration that seems to just ignore court rulings and do whatever the hell it wants, even that recent history is not exactly comforting.
They aren't. In a follow-up, she indicates that theoretically, she could apply for Senagalese citizenship. She made no mention of having any other citizenship.
This is why @carolyncbarthel.bsky.social and I renewed our passports before Trump's inauguration. Even at that, I still think there is an element of risk in traveling abroad as a politically active American, lest I be put on some list and denied entry or given a hard time when trying to return.

But fascists rule this country now.
Which makes me go, Hm.
Not doubting the real possibility of this happening bc of course this is so on-brand for #Stinky
Trying to be a responsible sharer of news, I was seeking verification outside of TikTok.
I should take a single, standalone TikTok video as gospel truth on face value w/o any corroboration
Because it’s got electrolytes!

I'll never ever forget that, shit hole countries.
I'm living in Germany myself. Having to face the fact that I may never see my family and friends again. 😢
Me: There's not going to be a 2028 election you STUPID SLUT

Passport is good post-Trump. But, holy shit, this is fucked up.
No one methinks.
The end of the MAGA era would mean many people are going to jail so it's more than a fight to remain in power now.
