As someone who has seen most facets/sides of the GRFP process, this is such a needed initiative.

I’ll reserve my GRFP commentary beyond that but… this is good.

I think your current grad students (say, if they were MS) could still also get pulled for a PhD? Unclear from first read how exactly the PIs identify folks they can pull - or if they specify in advance who they are trying to pluck or just *that* they are trying to pluck a candidate for a project.

It's not perfect but if you look carefully any of your students would still be eligible if they are selected and want to attend graduate school in an EPSCoR jurisdiction. So students can be plucked off the honorable mentions list from anywhere if they can/want to go there. An odd/interesting trial

Nearly all of the students that apply here are already in the PhD program. But I agree that it's still better to have some second chances than none at all...

Agreed. The move towards ERIs is another piece they could potentially leverage. Wouldn’t be geographically restricted but would benefit those not at the UC-Ivy League-UT etc powerhouses that get the vast majority of support and have the infrastructure in place to ensure it.

I think if they're looking for support broadening participation of people based on their identity and training background, then doing something that takes into account the baccalaureate institution (which is included in the app process for everybody) would be a good thing
