The north has towns, beaches & moors that rival Cornwall & Devon. If the government could support regional decision-making & investment it would be a start but I fear some of these places are now in such decline, like Clacton they will be an opportunity for people like Reform to spread their lies.

We had a holiday in Yorkshire recently. I was surprised by how depopulated E Yorkshire seems to be. Had to drive 6 miles to find a shop.

That's the countryside for you! Farmland with a few towns here and there. You drive over the wolds and it opens up. It's part of the appeal - you can see why Hockney likes it.

Redcar is not far from me. But to get there it's an hour bus then an hour on the train. Access is part of the issue with the resorts on the north east coast.

Lived in Northern coastal town all my life and can bear witness to the slow but sure changes that have been caused by the decline. The village library that my mother escaped to because my grandfather was killed in the war? Gone. The parade of independent shops? Gone.

The once thriving seaside town slowly becoming a ghost town. OK internet sales have changed retail, but so did Austerity 1 & 2 as well as cuts to public services. Local parks are a mess no one want to visit. Even the town centre McDonalds has closed. As a previous Park Force Volunteer I could go on.

Seems to get worse further north. Visited Grimsby a few years ago and I was shocked at how many rough sleepers there were. Loads of closed shops and make shift sleep shelters.

I live in a northern coastal town which is, in the main, thriving. But we have v high, above av house prices & COL here as a result. Northumberland just up the road is stunning and is a grand tourist attraction, often voted one of the best areas, yet one of the least visited in the U.K.

In the 80's/90's there was a transition from the annual week by the seaside to a weekend/day trip economy. A lot of the traditional guesthouses were forced to convert to HMO's or bedsits which were then let to people, often not locals, with social problems. That accelerated the spiral of decline.

When I first went to Scarborough as a child 'ear infections' from sewage in the sea were a problem

Then came blue flag, some sewage treatment, some regeneration & now, collapse

The corruption of the quick buck made it a backwater. Raw sewage makes it a place to avoid

UK holiday industry, hah!
