I’ve found a lot of the “debate” about this on social media painfully cynical. In addition to people suddenly caring about the Chagossians—who have been appalling treated by the British and Mauritians for decades—there has also been the attack on Mauritius’ status as an ally trying to degrade it.

I appreciate that there are many problems with how the country is governed, but it is important to put that in the context of it being the most long-lasting African democracy where transitions of power happen & with a court system backed up by the JCPC & generally quite Anglophile society.
