I will tolerate much in the world of online discourse, but I will not suffer the suggestion that Balatro doesn't deserve a GOTY nomination. That is my red line and I will not see it crossed.

Look, there are two wolves in me; one where balatro deserves everything and the other wants it to be something else, because of the amount of work that goes into making the larger games that take years of collaboration to make.
I've been on the fence about Balatro but between Watch Out For Fireballs talking about it and then all the nominations it got, i REALLY need to check it out.
Agreed. My red line was however crossed when I saw Diablo 4 and Destiny 2 being nominated for best ongoing game award. Why the fuck are we awarding games that remove content users paid for or charge you 30USD+ for fucking portal skins...?
My initial reaction to this was concern as I thought this could muddy the waters on what the award is for. But on further reflection, what the big deal? This is not worth getting wound up on. All nominations GOTY nomination are worthy.
Dude but just imagine…the Balatro song is going to be played in the medley. That alone is going to be worth the price of admission. Like how does that dovetail into any else?
Hey skillup. How does one go about reaching out to you about gaming news/events that are happening? Tried to look all over and couldn't find a place that seems to fit.
Honestly I see both sides, but I think that if a DLC/expansion is so, so good that it's the 2nd highest rated game of the year on Open Critic and nominated by a critical mass of judges, it deserves to be there. If it wasn't that level of good, we wouldn't be having this conversation.
It deserves recognition but maybe not for being GAME of the years if it's "only" more content for an already released game. If it were a standalone title I would not have any problem with it though.
The fact that you need to buy a game and then require a guide on how to access it is kinda wack. Just add a new category, I feel this sets a bad precedent to publishers “hey look we can keep adding new wheels to our car and not try new things”
Blood and Wine won best RPG in 2016 so DLC was always allowed to be nominated. This isn't a new thing this year it's just the first time that a DLC is nominated for Game of the Year.
I get the arguments against it. But if one is voting for the best gaming experience with no other qualification, then a DLC can be nominated or win if it’s good enough. Who makes the rules that one’s favourite experience this year can’t win? It’s obvious a lot of people loved Erdtree.
How much of this discussion is about the principle of what should be eligible to win vs wanting to see another game you like being in the spot instead?
I think this is a good argument, but it's also relevant to consider the other options that were excluded so that SotE could get its nomination. Stellar Blade and Infinite Wealth are probably the next two games up, are they better than SotE? Given that they're fully fleshed out games, I would say yes
Isn't DLC or expansion considered a part of the base game?! How can one give award to a certain game that has already won a GOTY award. A seperate category would have made much more sense. All this absurdity has created only bad press for FromSoftware which it did not ask for in the first place.
It’s similar but I think sequels carry that expectation anyway.
I just think DLC/Expansions should be its own category. Elden Ring had its time in the sun, Erdtree could be in the other category to make room for another full game GOTY contender.
I mean I think there should be a separate dlc category, but there isn’t, and Erdtree deserves the recognition so I simply can’t bring it in me to be mad
Balatro is legitimately the best ‘game’ I have ever played. In the simplest sense of the word game. No waiting around, no lore, no fluff—just a perfectly executed idea.
I need to play it. I wish Veilguard got nominated I know it was not for you but I'm loving it so far. But I just wish they didn't choose a dlc. Balatro is the single biggest nom since Celeste IMO and the DLC is overshadowing this glorious moment.
I really hope it wins goty, not because I like the game or have even played it, but because it actually deserves to be the first indie game to win the award
Balatro is very well made for what it is, but the game is a very simple loop that gets boring too quickly imo. I can think of a lot of other indies that gave me far more enjoyment than Balatro, and I am very much a roguelike guy
i actually finally bought the game to try it out since i've been hearing good things ever since it released. i'm just not into poker but once i learned what the game's really about it made me intrigued
As much as I love Balatro, I put as many votes as I could on Astro-bot in the hopes that it will send a message to the industry that people want games that are fun and not glorified store-fronts.
It's gonna lose because it's going against companies that have money, but I can dream...
I won't argue whether or not it deserves it, but why exactly are people surprised? it's got player counts and aclaim most AAA live services can only dream of!
While I was looking forward to how you'd justify the outer wilds deserving it this year as well, I can definitely get behind Balatro deserving game of the year.
Many people can not grasp the concept that a game can still be good even though they personally don't like it. (I don't care about Balatro, but I can see how it's objectively good and fun for many people)
The way the world just blithely accepts the affirmative action for big blockbuster action games is really bizarre. We should be talking about how Black Myth Wukong totally robbed Animal Well of a well deserved nomination.
I was so, so happy to see the nomination. So cool for LocalThunk but really for everybody who loves video games. It is 100% deserved and gotta be the “feel good” story of the year!
honestly? if we're adding indie nods for GOTY *AND BALATRO DESERVES IT*, we should pull Shadow of the Erdtree and replace it for Dread Delusion. real ones know what's up 😈
That one went under my radar. I need to check it out to even see what it’s all about. I spend too much time ass deep in live service games and MMOs sometimes to come up for oxygen and see some new stuff.
Honestly I loved it but I wouldn't quite put it at that GOTY level. Not over anything nominated. I am however extremely mad that it didn't even get nominated for best Art Direction. Like cmon bro.

What doesn't deserve it as a DLC (it deserves a "best DLC / expansion / addon category.
I'm a conflicted mess lol
Guild Wars 2 deserves to be there instead!
Therefore, I do not care who actually is going to end up winning.
doesn't it make more sense for DLCs to have their own category?
I just think DLC/Expansions should be its own category. Elden Ring had its time in the sun, Erdtree could be in the other category to make room for another full game GOTY contender.
It's gonna lose because it's going against companies that have money, but I can dream...
I just picked up Balatro though and haven't had a chance to dive in yet on switch.
btw they're doing this with other playstation games on pc as well. just check SteamDB.
Helldivers 2 got nominated for a lot of stuff so that proves it
