Women – who were so essential to the development of bobsleighing as a sport that it was mandatory for early 4-person teams to be mixed sex – were banned from participating in those teams in 1923; a ban which was only overturned in 2014.

Mount Ōmine, in Japan, prevents women from climbing more than halfway up, in case meditating monks become distracted. But, technically, because the path is public property, the ban is legally unenforceable.
