This is the crux of the problem in my view - any services, utilities or essential support to alleviate human suffering has to be “not for profit”. Adding profit margins to these is unethical - the argument about not attracting investment is irrelevant - because they should be publicly funded

It’s the same with care homes - I know someone who is selling their shares after owning half the company for about 7 years and they’re now multi millionaires - nearly all funded by local authority

My Mum funded herself in her care home paying far more than council funded residents. When I challenged it I was told she had to subsidise the council residents, she could afford it. That while the owner flew round in his private plane from his own airfield.

Exactly that. It sounds crass to say it but, whilst in care, my Mum coughed up over £330,000 which would have been my “compensation” for giving up my job, lowering my own pension rights and funding my own retirement. I looked after her for over 10 years until I could no longer cope.

Having been a foster carer the problem goes back years. No government has really engaged with the lack of help for foster carers from the State, and this breach has let private capital in.

Agreed, we fostered for the council in the early 2000s. Training courses aplenty, but little specific help.
