I haven't done anything myself but I know others who have tried to download their Kindle books but come across issues.

The download files are only readable on Kindle. Which makes downloading them pretty useless. 😩

I think there’s some free software that means the downloads are readable on other devices but it’s all too complicated for me.

What many of these people are doing is using a software that converts the file type to be usable on other ereaders. Downside is it’s a software that’s used for piracy as it can be used to strip DRM from books😅

Oh ok. I did watch a couple of videos but lost interest when they got the technical part. I usually buy physical copies of books I’ll want to re-read anyway.

I have a Kobo and no Kindle. It is a bit tricky to get set it up because of Amazon's DRM. Ironically if it's a popular book it'd be easier for people to get a pirate copy instead of trying to format it.

Kobo has their own ebook store, so I can buy from there. I can get books from Amazon too and go through the process of converting and sideloading, or I get free books (public domain) from Project Gutenberg and sideload them.
