i think about the second renaissance sometime, and how it has a whole sympathetic arc to it about robots with feelings, and only 25 years later i want to smash every computer i see with a baseball bat

Lol, a very brief period of time where we thought if robots can feel love we should love them that reached its zenith with Detroit: Become Human. My choices matter gameplay would be a lot different today.
Popular culture is still stuck on The Terminator, 40+ years behind the times. Techbros cut their teeth on a later generation of scifi about transhumanism gone wrong, except they identified with the villains of the pieces. The worst people imaginable want to make computers in their image.
I am totally with you. The Internet of Things is a nightmare to me. Yes, I have Hue at home but just as additional lights but would never want to talk to Gemini.

It's only been like 5 years since I played Detroit: Become Human and I'm already transitioning from robot saviour to siding with Clancy Brown's disgruntled detective
My big issue is their willingness to destroy copyright and think it is totally OK.
I like technology and what it has done to improve society but stripping artists, writers, and more of the rights to their creations to train your AI? pffffft. Come on. I can’t believe that argument was even made.
Any hope or dread of a future where robots might aspire to the heights of humanity has been smothered in the cradle by the dumbest humans imaginable. There's an irony to that.
I've always been on the caution side of wanting Sentient A.I because I've never liked the idea of 'look we have a slave class but they're metal so its okay' but had doubts about that until I got older and found out that most people in C.S actually think it'd be cool to have that scenario.
I think about this a lot, tech bros with their silicone valley mysticism will have more empathy and cafe about the rights of a chat bot than they ever will a person of any marginalised group
