OHC increases seem to shift to the upper layers of the oceans. Signs are increasing that we heat the oceans too fast from the surface. In 2023 we had an exceptional increase in OHC while the had an El Nino - this should not happen, as OHC should weakly increase or even decrease during an El Nino...

If the ratio of ocean heat content uptake switches towards higher layers then the physical runaway change of warming the oceans too fast kicks in for real - fun fact 1: in the Atlantic basin it already happened - oops! Fun fact 2: models do not see this feedback which consists of 3 stages...

Nice viz, as usual. 😁 I have been using a 30 year Lowess fit for western US climate data. 40 years seems to smoothe out possible accelerations. 30 years is the same window as climate normals.

Ocean heat content is often shown as a straight line progression but this graph indicates an acceleration IMO
