Here at UTSW, ~30% of PhD students are international. We have a big umbrella program where students get to choose a ‘sub’ program (‘cell and molecular biology’ and ‘genetics, development, and disease’ are two of the sub programs). https://www.utsouthwestern.edu/education/graduate-school/application-and-admissions/

I was told “they are funded by the Provost’s office using general vs “state” funding. There is no distinction between international or not for this funding prior to joining a lab.” So, same funding mechanism for both domestic and international students (before joining the lab).

@heiman.bsky.social I’m curious why HMS DMS do not have funding mechanisms to recruit more international students. I was one of the few international students (10-15%) in my program (BBS) back then. Is it better/(even) worse now?

good question. the website says that among current BBS students there are 256 domestic, 86 international https://bbsphd.hms.harvard.edu/about

Students are funded by the medical school their first two years before joining a lab, but I don't know how much of that is federal training grants bs other sources

Good to hear there are more international students in BBS! I like the two-year funding by school. Here, students are funded by school only until they join thesis labs.

I’ll know better about the funding mechanism soon since I’ll be serving on the admission committee this coming cycle, but I also asked the graduate program office about it. I’ll keep you updated as soon as I hear back. Now I am very curious, too.

Here at Yale neuroscience, we have a few (maybe 1-3 out of ~20) each year. makes it lower probability but possible. most competitive students have experience in US labs, and they are funded by private fellowships.
