it’s honestly really cool seeing average people move over there and realize a lot of what they’ve been told about China and Chinese people is literally just make-believe
Possibly just the result of some journalistic formality but it’s funny that for the scaremongering headline they went with transliterated mandarin instead of the translated reference to what I assume is the little red book
I’ll gladly agree to any and all of those points but I think I’m failing to grasp how my original joke about Western media’s messaging strategy seeming underprepared to spin this particular moment (in spite of inheriting aforementioned decades of propaganda) conflicts with what you said
Mostly because I didn't pick up on the sublte clues and realize it was a joke, and have opinions that sometimes escape my brain and come out through my fingers or mouth?
Yeah I’m pretty sure a majority of Americans when polled don’t even know who Mao Zedong is, I highly doubt the average American is very familiar with the little red book.
Yeah there’s basically only three kinds of Americans who even know the name “Mao Zedong” and could easily recognize a picture of him. Those are just communists, cold warriors, and terminally online people who’ve seen some memes that get dropped in the comments of any post about landlords being evil.
The US education system is truly fucked.
I learned about Chairman Mao in 7th or 8th grade in German School.
Granted thr Material wie were given was of heavily pro western/anti communist bias but still...
We also get our own handful of red scare lessons in American schools and the big three guys they always talk about in those is Stalin, Mao, and Castro, yet I’ve still seen polls that say a majority of Americans don’t know who Mao is lmao. It’s quite fascinating.
Healthcare in China is pretty expensive and generally shitty compared to most developed countries besides the US. Seeing a specialist for anything is usually an insane nightmare and even worse if you're not in a major city.
yeah idk all my chinese friends seemed horrified when i explained the american healthcare system to them so im gonna take their word on it - none of them had to do what i did, which was wait until we were all living in a different country (japan) to get any reasonable medical care
If you're poor and don't have a severe illness, yes it can be better if you live in a large city compared to being in a similar situation in the US. But this idea that it needs to be hidden from Americans is silly. Most European countries have vastly better healthcare systems.
Is there a word to describe this kind of behavior? It's like they know this, but they want to come in and talk and obfuscate around the point to reaffirm bias that China is shit and we're not that bad.
Of course. There just seems to be a big misunderstanding that China has universal healthcare or treatment is of similar quality to the US. As someone who has had a few run-ins with Chinese public hospital nonsense, I find it a bit odd that this continues to be spread around.
it's funny how so many people were so willing to be brainwashed into believing that every country our government doesn't like is extremely prejudiced towards lgbtq+ people
Listen, even though xenophobic conservative libs and fascists are cringe, i think it’s pointless and stupid to deny that Chinese society is very homophobic, and yes, more than American society
“I’m spreading obvious misinformation but if you dare call me out I’ll flail about and call you a commie!” You’re a conservative bud. Just accept it and move on.
The problem here is, of course, the implication that the first thing renders the second thing invalid. In fact, refusing to vote for shitty candidates and being angry are complimentary positions taken by everyone whose priority is meaningful change for the better.
Lmao, between this and the various people pointing out how you’re full of shit (none of whom you’ve managed to make a valid response/rebuttal towards), I’m starting to get the feeling you’re not being entirely honest

“Nah our readers are too stupid, it’ll go over their heads. They’ll be much more frightened by hearing a foreign language”
The past 50+ years has been spent vilifying China, and while healthcare and human rights aren't the top priority, they aren't in the US either.
They also don't have school shootings or weaponized incompetence.
