the full quote that people pull the opiate line from is so much more interesting and complete a thought, i really wish the little flourish about opium wasnt so catchy because the whole thing is worth approaching and investigating and understanding
I really like that Marxism doesn't require any of us to "believe" in it. It's just a scientific approach to politics and economy. Everything is an experiment. Contradictions exist and they get worked out over time. No suspension of disbelief required. It's all about the tangible and the material.
I mean thats true but we also shouldn't blunt Marx's atheism and critique of religion. Especially as religious nutjobs are running the world off a cliff
my only experience with opium is bartending at an opium den on st patrick's day after getting swept along to a party by a multimillionaire baby food heiress i met while working in a mafia owned cuban cigar bar. pretty cool ngl.
The only thing missing here is Marx analyzed religion from a historical materialism lens throughout history, not just in the (then) modern Capitalist age. There's a bit in Capital I think about it.
lots of people forget that opiates have medical uses! like opium was /the/ painkiller back then, a soothing medicine that nonetheless does not actually address the cause of the pain
The take that "religion is the drug that makes people stupid" or "religion is an addiction making people stupid" drives me up a wall. Why do hospitals give opiates to patients coming from horrible painful accidents?
Religion is the medication for the horrible painful accident of capitalism.
np, they've been taking the quiet sensible neolib route of just Asking Questions but they're ramping up, and they're British so only 8 people keep track of this shit
A couple brainrotting highlights. Deeply funny to be like, this could be cynical grifting, but maybe she got smarter. Then See More: October 7th from a Libschitz perspective.
it's like that meme about the Democrats but about dumb piece of shit Labour mouthpieces. they're gonna take a deep breath, put their chin on their knuckles, and decide that they have to get more racist
It's impossible to find stuff on here but I'm going to see if I can find some other examples as I feel like it's important this stuff is spread far and wide. They deserve to be trashed
Peak Novara was almost certainly when they responded to complaints of them platforming a eugenicist who wants to kill all disabled people by posting a solemn jpg that had no alt text.
In mid-1800ers God was already dead. Only few Europeans believed in that shit. They may never have, we only have claims about it, we doesn't know.
Religion was reduced to a better 'afterlife' IF you behaved and obeyed 'your masters' here and now. Apart from that, there was not much, and never were.
It's an underserved element in the scheme of most online discourse, because most people on both sides aren't thinking about it complexly, but the more pressing and significant element, the reason to hate religion if you want to call it that, is a material argument of tangible harms and agenda
It is a secondary point, that of course, we all know deep down almost of it is bullshit, in an academic sense. We can't disprove some jefferson's initial mover, but just about every religion under the sun falls apart to foam when seeking to prove itself.
but even if it didn't, it would be worth destruction, because regardless of that ostensible truth value, it serves to primarily exist solely as a subsidiary of, and a means to, broader cisheteropatriarchal capitalism.
It is an organ of exploitation, ideology, and enforcement of the dominant hierarchy, above and before any qualm of the validity of gods.
"assume for a moment that you cannot base your claims back to godly authority, what does this faith DO, in our material world"
That is grounds enough
It is irrelevant whether it gives people personal satisfaction, from that lens, if the overwhelming thrust is that it exists to manifest, reify, and protect harm and exploitation, for material goals, in material space, against material people.
If god was real, it is just to kill him

"The criticism of religion is, therefore, in embryo, the criticism of that vale of tears of which religion is the halo."
Religion is the medication for the horrible painful accident of capitalism.
