We know that a Ministry of Truth is a terrible path. The last thing we need is a set of people enforcing their definition of truth. The fight then becomes about who sets that policy. The solution won't be in direct censorship, either.

It’s impossible to escape where we are now without addressing the propaganda mills like Breitbart, Fox and Newsmax from polluting the information ecosystem with pure bullshit.
Is there a safe/stable equilibrium point in between “Fox News is an entertainment product” and “ministry of truth”? It sees like “news networks suffer consequences for making claims that are demonstrably false” might be a reasonable start.
I see three legal quirks enabling propaganda in the USA: news networks classify themselves as entertainment, DMCA safe harbor provisions permit social media networks to proliferate untruths, and Citizens United keeps the PAC money flowing. These supports need to be removed, but I’m not sure how.
I think that the US can't solve this from where we are. The government I am talking about in my initial long post is almost certainly going to have to emerge elsewhere. Fascism is rising all over the place, not just the US.
I think we're too far gone to be the country where the new governmental genes arise, but hopefully after we see somewhere else become propaganda resistant, we can eventually incorporate those genes.
