It’s the age of re-makes and riding on the coattails of writers who had imagination and talent.
Creating something new is beyond the grasp of screenwriters today.
best thing about a cult classic is all the people that collectively decided to make the greatest piece of art possibly could and then never speak of it again 💀
Because building up on something takes that sweet, sweet cash that sometimes even some of the biggest creators don't have. George Miller (the dude who created Mad Max), had such grand plans for it, but Warner Bros subminated his vision at every step in the past two decades
The creators of these remakes know they can bank on nostalgia. And what's sad is, a lot of the time, they lean SOLELY on the nostalgia, so the remake itself just isn't up to par anyway
the httyd looked like a very good adaptation, like they put hella effort into it, but I still don't like it solely because it's an adaptation when they could've spent that money on a new/original idea
Live remakes are easy and cheap bc most of them already have a huge following which means they pay nearly nothing in advertising. They also don't want to pay for/ take a chance on original ideas. It's also why so many books get made into movies
Live action adaptations are always the worse version of the thing... Like do you want to see the thing you really like but less ascetically pleasing and janky?
I have always wanted a better studio to take over the “I am number Four” series movies, bc the last ones to do it(I think it was dreamworks) fucked it up so bad, and that series has some real potential. And I’m sad that it was a one and done cuz the studio fucked it up so bad
It’s also a lot harder to market new ideas to the public. The way we consume media now, we skip damn near every commercial except one day a year. The only way these movies get marketed is we share them with each other. Something has to get us interested at first. Something from childhood, perhaps.
Agreed, but it’s too much of a risk. Movies cost so much to make now that studios feel like they can’t afford to risk not having an audience. Films were nostalgic for already have a built in audience. They know people will watch even if it’s just to compare and complain. Sad, really.
This!!! My fave movie ever was Lilo and Stitch and even tho the live action looks ~okay~ I just can’t get on board with it. They don’t really add anything :/
Ok but Sonic 3 looks like it's following SA2 and doing a good job of it. Disney just slaps any movie in live action and expects it to work even if it looks gross.
Anyone who ever insists on fresh ideas better not be religious because those stale ass turds have been getting recycled for 2,000 years now. Christ, bring back Greek mythology. Those stories are way fucking better.
Whilst I theoretically agree - I think there are cases when you want to bring good stories to new audiences & best way to do that is to make an animated movie live action.
Young kids wouldnt appreciate 1930s animation so would discount it but live action version brings it up to date to new audience
Nothing says guaranteed hit like a 3rd remake of a superhero character based on some cartoon based on a comic (while completely ignoring the source material and the fans)
as much as i agree with the second point, there are some things that would be better told in live action. like what, idk, i cant think of an example rn. but still
They’re making many new things, you aren’t seeing them. Go look through your closest movie theater for movies that aren’t remakes and go see one, nothings gonna change otherwise. So many new movies are made each year and flop because nobody cares
They are not all bad, There are hits & misses as with everything the issue is the cast most of the time, especially when they cast for a singing role & the actor isn't a singer. Video Game to Movie/TV adaptations are some of the worst, though I will admit.
As long as people continue to go see live action remakes, Hollywood will continue to make live action remakes. You can't blame studios for making what they think their audience wants to see.
The only way to stop these movies from being made is for everyone to collectively stop going to see them. When the live action remakes stop making studios money, then they'll stop making them.
I watched a YT video months ago that Original IP movies have been harder to make lately. It's all stuff from current or previous works like Disney live actions, MCU, Star wars, etc. Gone are the days of original works like Stepbrothers, Talladega Nights, Dodgeball and comedies.
Even old favorites are getting sequels because they don't want to touch original ideas. We're getting Happy Gilmore 2, and I've heard of rumors of an Austin Powers 4.
It's all about the money now and what's most likely to work. They don't have faith in original ideas. 🙁
For me it’s the waste of talent that’s the worst part. Look at how good all those lions and hyenas were in Lion King. Amazing actors who probably will never get another speaking role again.
Some love actions I don't mind, but they need to stop cranking them out for media that didn't need them. Like did we really need a ninjago live action?
Especially when some media can be adapted to other forms of entertainment like animation. Not every book needs a live action, but some books could use an animated series or two.
I know, it's like they make the same movie with less whimsy and artistic styling and then nobody likes it. It's completely pointless, if someone refuses to watch a cartoon of a thing but watched a life action version, they should be put into the machine.
I like the live action stuff...for like OLD animated movies from 40-70 years ago. Something that has kinda faded from the zeitgeist. This live action how to train your dragon and Moana is completely unnecessary
The problem is that not enough people give original movies a fair shot, because it's something different and it puts off the average popcorn-munching nitwit movie-goers that just keep asking for the same crap.
Also technology changes and what was amazing and 'wow' in 1988 is crap and unrealistic in 2024. My teenage + kids wont watch old movies as theyre used to modern CGI so 1980s version isnt good enough! Animated movies are similarly affected - Snow White was made in 1930s
I don't think it's on the audience. The Wild Robot is completely original, and it's doing very well - it's a good movie, so people are telling their friends about it.
The problem IMO is that studios don't advertise original movies anymore. They drop a trailer and expect social media to do the work.
Hollywood is naturally hostile to new ideas, because they're betting real money on it. And it's not a little money, it's a LOT.
It's hard as hell to get an original screenplay read, nevermind produced, because it's asking someone to bankroll a rando's idea to the tune of many millions.
One of the original writers/directors, Dean Deblois, wanted to go back to the series he loves so much and wanted to approach it from a live action approach
At first, I was skeptical once Universal announced the project but one of the co-directors of the animated trilogy is directing the upcoming adaptation. After watching the teaser, here’s how I think this will go down. 65-75% might be shot for shot. Will it hold up to the original? Most likely not.
In the current race for record profits, new IPs are too risky for companies now. It's far easier for them to mangle an original idea into an established IP or nostalgia bait with older ideas because they know it will make them more money for less risk 😕
is there anything that’s been turned into live action that’s actually been better than the animated version?
I can think of a couple things that’ve been decent but nothing amazing

Forget remakes as well, they almost never live up to the original or its source material.
There is so much out there that hasn't ever been adapted.
If you're into audiobooks, then stay a while and listen... (for some reason i'm 2 hours into listening to this for the third or fourth time) https://youtu.be/YWEGUfIptxI?si=9QSWiqkeeZjfiHPh

They keep making shit because the unwashed are blindly willing to spend all their money on it.
It's actually become a predatory/borderline abusive relationship between Hollywood and comic book nerds.
Disney: “Live action Gummy Bears starting The Rock as the Duke it is.”
THIS IS WHY LIVE ACTION WILL FUCKING CEASE TO EXIST!!! BECAUSE EVERYONE FUCKING HATES THEM AND WANTS THEM EXTINCT!!!
SUCH A HEARTLESS WORLD!!!
Do yall not know what the film industry is? It’s always remakes and reimagining too.
Either don’t watch them or stop complaining bc they’re not gonna stop operating like that.
Although, Spirited Away Live Action was pretty amazing. (and yes from a different country)
I don't need to empathize with Maleficent, or Scar, or Cruella, or even the Wicked Witch. Just let bad guys be bad guys.
They're just on Tubi
