If you’ve ever seen captions for an event happening live you know those captions are very often gibberish. You don’t have to be hearing impaired to know this! What kind of rotten brain do you have to think deaf people have it TOO EASY

I'm hard of hearing. I keep closed captioning on for movies & shows.

If I watch live sports, the captions are hilariously off. Half the time they give up on transcribing & just type out advertising copy. Like I'll be watching a game and the captions are just reciting an ad for Dominos pizza.

Exactly! “CC works fine” is just an absurd thing to say about live events. I often have captions on just to make my life easier, and I generally turn them *off* during sports, because they’re distracting and not at all useful. Which is not a slam on the captioners, by the way.

I don’t know the answer to this for sure, but to save money, my understanding is that a lot of it in sports is automated with voice recognition, not done by a skilled person. Different ball of wax.

For starters they go back and edit. It takes time to get a transcript. And you can do an errata sheet for mistakes.

Ok that makes sense, that they can go back and edit. My main exposure to this is tv and film where they make it seem like they can just read things back on the spot and it's always 100% accurate even in the moment with no time yet for doubling back to edit.

It's a good time to point out that closed captions seemed to have gotten worse. (AI???) I agree that live CC is atrocious but it's even bad for some shows. I just recently subscribed to Mhz Choice and the subtitles were so good (it's their whole business) making me lament some bad CC out there.

It's interesting to me that the key complaint from both of the people in the screencapped comments is that ASL is SILLY. It seems to go hand in hand with their objecting to homosexuality mainly because "it's gross!" It's grasping for something to be outraged about and for a reason for that outrage.

I am assuming that they are referring in part to the way ASL interpreters gesticulate emotively, while failing* to understand that THAT IS PART OF ASL, especially when trying to convey urgent information on what can be a tiny screen (phones, etc.)

That’s why they call it craption. I’ve never seen any live news have 100% accuracy in captions.
It’s always delayed and there’s so much correction going on by the time a deaf person pieces information together the news is over.

Also, typos/mishearing from closed captioning can completely change the meaning of a thing. As old stuff gets put on new streaming services, they self perpetuate because of course whoever owns the thing doesn't want to spend more money to fix it...

There's occasional weirdness where the actor speaks somewhat differently than the script, but there is a script and people speak fluid written English.

Real speech is disfluent, and very hard to transcribe and caption in real time.

Netflix shows, sitcoms, movies, etc, are pre-captioned and can be edited for accuracy before they are submitted. Sports, news, etc, are captioned live and cannot be edited on the fly.
