One of the most basic parts of photojournalism includes caption writing. There is no who, what, where or when here. Also no credit for fact checkin avail.
The art of the photo and the idiom is the picture tells the story, it doesn’t need a caption nor written context, it’s all encompassing, it tells one and a million stories. It’s power is the image. You don’t put captions on a painting or a sculpture!
[BTW/ FWIW I spoke with two photojournalists (with Photojournalism BA) about this issue. All three said that the “Superman cape photograph” does not need a caption.]
Our boy here is not gonna give an inch on this one, though.
Agree mate. This particular photo and image is so powerful, to be honest I can’t think of a caption that wouldn’t diminish that power and it’s impact. As far as meaning goes I don’t think it’s a stretch of the imagination to take anything and everything from it.
I am one right here. Been doing it since ‘97. Captions are an important part of photojournalism. I’m curious to see these folks work though. Feel free to link.
Not all of the time. So many photo images taken during wars have no caption, they’re not needed. Not everything needs a written explanation nor caption, they speak for themselves.
I’m taking specifically about photojournalism, where communicating basic facts is extremely important. Both for news consumption and while contributing to a first draft of history. For example date and location location. In the modern age with misinformation and disinformation growing online……
As you know, photojournalism includes being unbiased, accurate, and respectful of the subject. It must present a truthful story and usually does include caption, you're correct.
But the image seems to not be staged to create a false narrative so I am letting out some rope on this one.

A second sentence would follow with context. The 1st sentence is by far most important.
The photojournalist has a responsibility to communicate (report) basic information w their photos

Superman was created in the lead up to WW2 in 1938 by two Jewish men who thought the world “desperately needed a crusader, if only a fictional one.”
