Easy to forget how much of a departure the Mies van der Rohe TD Centre was when it was built (Toronto circa 1969).

And right beside the Bank of Commerce building which, when it was built, was the tallest building in the British Empire.

Canadian Bank of Commerce head office (now Comerce Court North) remained tallest in British Empire until 1962 (31 years).

What will be the next era defining building in Toronto?

The One? first supertall, but not that drastic in terms of design

Would Toronto accept such a disruption to the existing character today?

I was a child living in the city at the time. It was a major draw for locals to come see our first skyscraper.

I love showing this photograph to students. Best way to show the effect of the TD on the City.
