As far as I can tell, the @ symbol is only a social signal that implies the domain is a social account (looks more like twitter than bsky). Cause otherwise it’s a website. But telling people that you’re @domainname is not enough to get people to bsky. Good concept, still too murky for me.
Not sure if you use Gmail as your email provider but you can connect unlimited accounts to the same email
With gmails domain extension trick so you can easily manage these under the same inbox.
Been thinking this through — I guess when I switch to a custom domain I’ll sign up for a new account with the newly-freed handle, then update it to direct visitors to the new one. Both show up in search though so maybe I just abandon it 🤔
I had similar concerns but decided to do a custom domain and then create an alt account to squat on nkohari, my typical username. No one would conceivably want it for real use anyway

Side note: I had toyed with the idea of an AmIJustinJackson where I only tweet about existential stuff related to you. I wish I had
I love the idea, for sure.

As far as I can tell, that's enough to stop anyone from registering the social handle you don't want people to take.
That said, it's also not a bad idea to explicitly direct people to your actual profile.
