I genuinely don’t give a fuck if people who think like this go back to twitter. You are not entitled to my attention. I don’t owe you shit. I’m allowed to curate my experience and interactions however the fuck I want. Bye.

I just wonder if some people truly don't understand how actual friendships are formed. It's usually not by someone yelling "PLEASE BE MY FRIEND" at you relentlessly.
I think a lot of these newbies think a followback from a big account is like a celebrity in real life nicely giving you their autograph, when what they're really asking for is more like the celebrity's phone number. It's not just being dickish not to give someone that access!
Exactly - I'd prefer 50 mutuals that I have stuff in common with/enjoy engaging with, to a sea of 5000 followers-for-the-sake-of-following. The latter sounds absolutely exhausting.
So I do have some sympathy for people who feel excluded or just not connected and in search of community.
But follows from large accounts will not help with that because if a large account is following a lot of other accounts they're not going to see yourself but once in a blue moon anyway.
Same and I avoid most of the huge accounts that do follow me if I hit like or make a remark because it ends up taking over my whole feed. I enjoy their content and I can see them plenty anyway.
Honestly, I suspect most of the accounts pushing the idea that you should follow back are spammers or other marketers who want that to become a norm because it would make their jobs easier.
Exactly. I'm not anybody "important" (not a writer, talent, pundit or whatever) and I limit who I follow because I don't want the website to be useless.
even apart from the “no one owes you their attention” bit the amount of time this would take is not insignificant, like are you meant to be online all the time? check in once a day to follow everyone who follows you? I’m deeply confused by people who think like this.
I follow back if I see interesting comments from people. I do occasionally look at my followers, but so many I find myself blocking, rather than following

It’s relentless this conversation!

So...
Blocked. You are useless to what I want to read.
I can't imagine using social media in a worse way than following accounts you don't like and being followed by people who don't like you.
I got thousands of followers
and hundreds I read
Cuz I ain't no follow back girl,
I ain't no follow back girl.
Engage with people, be interesting, then accounts are more likely to follow you.
Automatically following back is a terrible idea, as it's what spammers bank on.
Turns out we have a mutual who reposts you.
I build my feed so when someone good like you says follow so and so I do.
I don't expect any follows. its earned
