I personally have Philip Defranco to thank for keeping my head above the waters.
And I have this whole thread that traces information ecosystems in red states...
Major media exists to inform the larger public. That’s why buying it and transforming it to propaganda worked so well.
We will be fighting the wrong battle.
We have to fight the system, not the victims of it.
(No I’m not talking about making friends with racists and Nazis.)
It’s so sanitized and misleading, downplaying that we’re in the early stages of a war. We could still avert it! But not by pretending it’s jokes & tantrums.
But the topic and intertwined media ecosystems makes it easier to compare/contrast headlines. Even satire of The Onion vs The Beaverton is unsettling.
The Telecom Act is a big reason that that transformation happened the way it did.
Like the evening news has always been horrible but the difference in magnitude is staggering
it’s built on a foundation of individuals who have been deliberately disadvantaged (socially, economically, etc), and then had their disadvantage leveraged against them and others
An independent media group is incredibly important.
Perhaps getting the guardian as a news channel as well as paper, would be good.
A main driver of this from my perspective is the need for traffic/amplification that is born from social media algo. it has distorted EVERYTHING.
