answered my own question - a 4->3 road diet is typically recommended for traffic levels below 10,000 ADT.

fullerton is 3x that level between 30000-40000 ADT. you could road diet but you would be deliberately creating a traffic jam.

Personally I wouldn’t mind that if it meant drivers would stop treating the road like a highway. I’d rather cross the street between standstill traffic than try to avoid getting squashed at 40mph in an unsignalized crosswalk. Of course I’m aware it would annoy drivers to sit in traffic

I feel like annoying drivers is unfortunately a political dead-end in Chicago, since most people here are drivers, and I'm having trouble coming to terms with that. Actually, I don't want to come to terms with it, but I am just constantly noticing how often everyone here caters to drivers first

In my experience, people actually want the traffic calming on the streets they live on, which makes it feel like you can do it but you gotta go through block by block, which is painfully slow.

I actually think that less than 50% of Chicagoans are regular drivers.

It's just that the majority of those with power (middle class, working age) are.

I’m a regular Chicago driver (every day to work, weekly shopping & social activities). I support lower speeds, cameras, lane narrowing, speed humps, traffic calming of all kinds, protected bike lanes, less parking, more public transport routes & frequency (& more accessible!), BRT on thru roads…

I also find many stretches of Ashland feel equally perilous and terrible, so crossing planted medians off doesn’t feel like a big loss to me. Wider sidewalks is compatible with what’s been done east of Orchard, at least.
