If your name doesn't match, get a passport asap. Don't wait. I'm sure they will make it harder by dragging out the time it takes to get one. Yes, it sucks to have to pay to vote - which is exactly what this means. Hopefully some Dem. fundraising can go to cover the cost for low income women.
The SAVE Act lists several types of documentation that would be accepted, including a form of identification issued consistent with the requirements of the REAL ID Act of 2005, a valid United States passport, valid military ID, forms of Tribal identification and proof of naturalization. 1/2
I had to jump through some hoops to get a Real ID (get an old marriage certificate) so why should I also have to get a passport, at a cost of hundreds of dollars, when I've already had to prove my identity with more precision than any man? Is this "just" clumsy hating on trans people?
Many of us actually changed our birth certificates at the time that we changed our other documents (at least in states we're allowed to do so). This is much more targeted at cis women than trans in this case, because misogyny was always the point. It's also why they never talk much about trans men.
It's targeting women's right to vote. Trans people don't necessarily change their name, especially the last name. And plenty of people change their names for many other reasons, such as custody or safety. So this would negligently inflict a shit ton of collateral damage. For literally no reason.
It's time to end the outdated, sexist notion that a woman should take her husband's last name when she marries. It's very feminist of the Republicans to basically kill the practice going forward. Those of us who were silly enough to change our names do need to change back ASAP. Guess I need a lawyer
Changing my name is in process. Also telling my daughter to go ahead, find a partner, live together (never marry & separate every few years so you can't have a common law marriage), have a family only if you want to & always keep your $ separate.Never make it easy for them to get any power over you.
In 1955 my parents didn’t have a first name for their 9th child so it says female______.
I married so neither names match. Fortunately, I have a US passport, that is if Feump doesn’t change our country’s name, too. 🤷🏼
To change your name on your birth certificate requires a court order. Wouldn’t the courts just love having to do that for the millions of married women.
Likely Next Steps:
-Requiring husband's consent for a woman to file for a divorce
-Voting occurs by family unit, with the "head of household" representing the votes of all eligible voters
I wouldn't be surprised if the same circumstance was used to disqualify votes - specifically divorced women that simply started using their maiden name but didn't legally change it back.
It is an outdated custom. If names be changed, let both parties choose a new one together.
Dont they have so called "Birthname" which to refer women or anyone who changes legal name ? Where Im from you always retain a record of what was your original name
Some of us got freedom losing our maiden names. I know a lot of children of abusive fathers like me that ditched his name for their mother's. My birth certificate is his name. Never again.
The long term unintended consequences of this will be fewer and fewer women willing to change their last name when they get married. Or just refusing to marry at all.
The obvious thing to do would be for the women and the men who had changed their names to change them back to match their birth certificates. That would get them back on the voters list and it would annoy the people who think women should be pregnant in summer and barefoot in winter.
I kept my ex husbands last name. Do I have to go back and change it back to my before marriage name? Maiden name sounds a bit cringe at this point in my life. But really? Is this what I am gonna have to do?
What an effing nightmare, deeds, CCs, car titles, bank accounts and wtf else? 🤬
It’s up to the states to set voting registration laws. Only people in the backwards red states need to be concerned. Are they going to tell women that have been registered under their married names for 40 or more years they cannot vote anymore. It will never hold up in court
Republicans are so dumb that they forgot that a woman’s birth certificate will be in her maiden name, but then she could register to vote using her maiden name?
I've seen this take a couple times... Pretty sure JD's license, passport, voter registration all match his birth certificate. JD is just a nickname, like Rafael "Ted" Cruz or Dwight "Ike" Eisenhower.
He was legally born James David Bowman, his father's last name. And then when his mom got remarried he got that last name, which is the new name on his birth certificate.
They can still present other forms of valid identification besides a birth certificate. Not to mention that everyone realizes marriage-name-change is an exception. Don't be apocryphal.
You’d think. But they’re also stipulating that marriage certificate does not qualify as REAL ID. The way they’re disqualifying a state drivers license as reliable ID.
Thats because they arent looking for something that ticks all the boxes for being the perfect identification for proving voter eligability its finding one that will disenfranchise as many undesirable voters as possible.
I know my reply was just saying they don't care about real ID and what makes sense. I guess it might have made more sense to respond to the other commenter. So I apologise if my comment felt aimed at you in some way. It was more my chiming in.
Agreeing with you both. It’s not about accurately identifying citizens and upholding voting integrity - never has been about that as evidenced in this last election. It’s about disqualifying from voting those citizens who are harmed by their policies
My question is does anyone have the documents to support this and what exactly they say? I realize they want to revert to past times when women did not have the vote.
A passport is a federal identification, to get a passport. All you do is prove your birth certificate and the reason your name changed. Bingo, if they’re disputing birth certificates, they cannot dispute real IDs or passports. Just won’t hold up. Bunch of bastards!
If this horrid act passes, would married women be able to bring their wedding certificate along with their birth certificate to prove they are the same person? Something to consider.
I changed my name after my kids were in school and it became confusing for them. Happy to go to SS and change it back now that they’re grown. Stupid gop…stupid law. Probably won’t have the votes to get out of the house.
Registering is in person. So e.g. setting up 1 place per county would mean 1/10k people in rural areas and 1/20 mil people in LA. That way, you can make registration in big cities impossible. And you know who rural areas vote vs cities.
They always try to subvert the #constitution they claim to love:
Art. IV, Sec. 1 requires, “Full Faith and Credit shall be given in each State to the public Acts, Records, and judicial Proceedings of every other State.”
They want to ignore court orders regarding name/gender changes.
I see a flood of informed concerned women filing petitions for name change in their local courts, citing the reason for requesting reverting to birth surname as “fear of future voter suppression.” Do it!!
I would hate that. I cut off my abusive alcoholic father and shed myself of his name too. I have my mother's last name now. Fuck them. I'm not going back. My name change is a legal document.

Should we women then give up our married names and revert to our birth names?
I got no problem with that but what about all the husbands out there?
The republicans just want to go back to the dark ages.
“Caveman want woman, hit on head with big stick and drag by hair.”
Only white land owning males.
Reading congressional research office “in focus” summary of Save Act.
I don’t see this requirement stated in the way shown in meme . Looks like other workarounds maybe.
