A lot of this has to do with the fact(s) that 1) not enough money, 2) too little time to assess applications (everyone applies all the time), and 3) legal requirements (safer to make rejections generic).

So sorry to hear that! This is the part that I dislike the most about my work. I'm totally Ok with rejections based on fair grounds, even with the fact that my submission is good but there is not enough money, but unfair and poorly justified grant reviews drive me nuts...
I appreciate you posting things like this bc you are obviously a very successful scientist and it makes me feel less bad about my own many (unjustified) neg reviews and rejections. Just remember that truly world changing ideas are usually poorly understood & underappreciated. Keep at it!
