Maybe I just lack the genre language for this, but I wish there were more "cozy" games that were cozy in terms of gameplay (relaxed, forgiving, etc) without being cozy in terms of subject matter. Grim, bad times cozy games.

That's what people misunderstand about coziness, it can only truly exist as a counterbalance to tension. Also, I'd suggest you wishlist PVKK on steam because it sounds like it's what you're looking for
Will do, thanks for the suggestion! I saw the sim-looking control panel and I wasn't so sure, but then I saw customizing the bleak little bunker room and now I'm in.
I would say Until Dawn and all the dark pictures games. Horror games but there's not much needed from you other than some quicktime events and dialogue choices.
I actually own Until Dawn but still haven't played it. Is there not really much friction to it? I always imagined it would be the kind of thing where you do stuff "wrong" and then the wrong characters die and you reload, but I guess I totally assumed that and have no idea.
Yeah it makes a big deal of its branching paths and people can die, I actually don't know if you can even reload cuz I've never done it that way, I just play it as a visual novel. I was imagining by "forgiving" you kind of just meant like, you're not rationing bullets in an RE game or something
I definitely mean that, too. I'll definitely try it, that's roughly what I was picturing. I guess by "forgiving" I mean sort of never punishing you or creating much tension in actual gameplay. Weirdly I feel like the Berserk musou was one of the "coziest" games I've played recently, in that sense.
I had this idea years back of rougelite games giving you a score/restart modifier based on how badly you ate shit the last time. "oh you opened the first door and got creamed by an ogre, we'll give you, uh, double health every time going fowards"
I like this idea, but it has to be carefully executed or else it risks becoming a shame-based mechanic, like when you lose too many times in an RPG and the death screen goes "wow I didn't realize you're BAD at this, do you want to play on easy instead?"
