Bombing Iran is a terrible idea. It’s unlikely to work—and nothing could be more perilous to American democracy than going to war under Donald Trump, Robert Kagan writes. https://theatln.tc/CH1ulpLM

Nothing is more perilous to democracies everywhere than the
US congress allowing an authoritarian clown to usurp the power of American voters. When hubris becomes lethargy, is all lost?
Pretty sure that was and still is the plan. The president's FY26 budget increases DOD and DHS spending disproportionately and cuts just about everything else.
It will be a-symmetrical warfare. Expect things like a poisoned Mississippi river, mustard gas in NY subways, release of weaponized COVID. That sort of thing.
In his first term, he also declared a national emergency to enable him to reallocate congressionally budgeted funds for military families, etc. to build his wall (which fell down, people climbed over, or simply walked around).
I don’t know if the short attention spans of much of the citizenry need this daily news horror show, but I honestly miss the days when Biden challenges were trying to deliver an infrastructure bill and forgive student debt.
Some in the U.S. media are conveniently forgetting that the CIA helped overthrow a DEMOCRATICALLY elected Iranian government in 1953, forcing Iranians to endure the Shah’s brutal rule
Which resulted in the Islamic Revolution that the cited for every single thing we think is wrong with Iran…🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️🤷🏻♀️
USAmerican legacy media **cannot** bring itself to write with the awareness of our historical abuses and mistakes. Our federal leadership is the same, because the American public cannot admit it en masse ----> admitting requires reconciliation.
You are twisting history. There was no brutal rule under Shah, just plain old capitalism. Soviet Union internal communist propaganda helped overthrow Shah, Islamists just rode with it and took power. Murdered all communists and are brutally ruling Iranian people since then.
I don’t think I ever feared Iran. They are as competent as Russia. I watched them run one of their warship’s boilers with salt water and it went dead in the water because they had massive tube failures. My fellow Navy veterans will know what salt water does to a power plant boiler.
With that said, it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t underestimate their terror networks. Trump attacking them will not lead to anything good. We should fear Trump more than Iran. If they conduct terror on our soil, Trump will definitely move to consolidate power over Americans and use Iran as his excuse.
When you consider masked individuals with no id’s faces covered and military installations are propped up in the inner cities of this country(I know dem cities) when you consider that the country has declared war on itself willingly in compliance of the courts, media, congress no OUTRAGE SAD 😢🌚
Republicans starting a war in the middle east over weapons of mass destruction that don't exist. Destroying the middle class and ballooning the national debt for tax cuts to the rich. Killing a strong economy they inherited for short term gains all while distracting with social non-issues.
Familiar
Oh absolutely! It is so plain to me that this is a horrendously diabolical move. I think they are likely to declare martial law because...immigrants... = full on cruelty & 'justified' killing of non-white people. The evil here is beyond comprehension...
Duhhhh. On top of which, a couple of Trump isn't engineered emergencies within the US -- a bomb here, an air transport tragedy there -- and the domestic State of Emergency is imposed. But coming from Robert Kagan, this is quite a statement.
No sure wha to fear more, a terrorist attack or the expansion of military force used against Americans and the eventual suspension of elections for some cooked up reason?
1953: US ousts Mossadegh, backs Shah. 1979: Iran revolts, births theocracy. 2025: Still haunted. Regime change ≠ stability. Actions have blowback. We traded democracy for oil, got 40 yrs of hostility. That work out “great”? No—predictable failure w/ a flag on it.
Was this the plan all along? Go to war, so Trump could be a dictator over the entire United States of America, turn the US Constitution into ashes under a premise of war. If so, who's behind it? Trump's decline and lack of competency make him incapable of such a plan.
Precisely why for the regime, bombing Iran is the best choice they had. Any Iran retaliation, especially on American soil, will open the door to unfettered dictatorship. Don't be surprised if the regime INTENTIONALLY allows such an attack.
Quid pro quo.
