Those banning the books are so afraid of the books, of the stories and I will never, ever truly understand why. Books are many of our first friends. They certainly were for me. A grown-up and their kid should indeed be able to determine when that particular kid might be ready for a book.

But that decision shouldn’t be the one made for all kids. Another kid may need that book, that story, that friend. We will always strive for books to sit on the shelves of libraries, school and public. All sorts of books for all sorts of people.

Because all sorts of stories keep us going, they insist we belong. They are the author and illustrator’s hard work, work that tells us, “Oh! You DO belong. See for yourself!” The school library is often the only place library kids have an opportunity to be library kids.

Believing we belong in books means we are more likely to believe we belong in the world. It is how we believe, as helpers, that we can help the world.

That’s what library kids will do, help! They just need the books to show the rest of us ✨

I just happen to love books, love libraries. I am thankful for what they’ve done for my life. They are healing, they’ve done so much for so many of us. I wish we would give the books peace, and let them be.

Books offer access to interior lives and those who ban books can’t stand to see what’s inside. Thank you for all the work you do on behalf of the next gen who deserves to find themselves in books everywhere
