I wanna say it worked because it was made early on when Hollywood did not feel like it had to pander (sorry) to the Chinese market. There’s no ‘because the panda does kung fu, Taiwan is China’ or ‘they are eating noodles - the cultural heritage of China with its 5000 years of history’! iirc

I'd bet my co-workers had similar approaches, at best, and I'd bet these experiences were hardly unique in Hollywood.
