Stars protect themselves. That's why they're stars. Clooney hasn't done this for 40 years; returning to the theatre is huge, but broadcasting it? Good for him. He has juice. I'd also like to know how they got Equity to agree to it.

I remember that live production of Fail-Safe he did on TV some 20 years ago and kind of felt it a missed opportunity that he didn't try to parlay it into "George Clooney Presents" every week.
I remember the story of PN talking to neighbors in Martha's Vineyard. "They want me to play Batman." The eyeroll was heavily implied. This was in the late 90s.
Re: the union issues - how is this different from when plays are sometimes streamed to cinemas (these are often operas or ballets though) or streamed plays available on services like NTatHome?
So something like Hamilton being released on a streaming platform 4 years ago would have involved hoop jumping so huge no one would do it except for the biggest hits possible I suppose?
Exactly. And it's a shame because if there was a similar system to NT Live here lots of people would make lots of money. It could increase business at theatre buildings. But besides union issues, producers jealously protect their end.
Yes, and also I have to assume it would increase the cultural footprint of American theatre, which is still geographically pretty inaccessible to many people.
