This is one of the best movies I’ve seen in years. It owes something to Tennessee Williams in the best sense, & the performances are built on beautifully precise physical & vocal control - www.rogerebert.com/reviews/the-...

Occasionally I meet, say, a doctor or a pilot - both of whom are of more use to the world than Musk - and they’re just as fascinated by what I do as vice versa. This is a sign of intelligence.

Frederick Wiseman on his method: 'I want to give you just enough information to feel like you're there... I also assume the audience is just as smart or dumb as me.'

Really hate that 'this movie has dialogue' has become synonymous with 'it's stagey & thus a total failure of the art of cinema, which requires you to move the camera a lot & ideally be silent' 🙄

Reminds me of Frank Lloyd Wright's comment on St Patrick's Cathedral: 'I think, of course, it is a great shame.'

Bob Crane had two sons. The elder, from his first marriage, is a Hollywood historian & ghostwriter. Nice guy. The other, from his second marriage, is bitter that Schrader's movie was made, not his; in response he launched a website where for a subscription you could see his father's porn.

In answer to why she is a spinster, 1889:

‘We’re talking about the same Bob Crane? Hogan? Not Bob Croom or something? You sure? … Scottsdale? Jesus… if I end up there… well, uh… did they uh… did they find anything?’

When I knew it, roughly 2002-08, a really rough place.

A formidable woman. A Jamaican schoolteacher. You wanted to sit up straight just listening to her. Adamant her son was a poet, storyteller & important artist - she spent the rest of her life framing it that way.

You may know the story of the raven at the Tower who didn't like his Master, so he'd play dead - enlisting his friends to stage a funeral, as ravens do - then fly off laughing (literally) when the Master came. I've just been informed of a raven at Knaresborough Castle who doesn't like tourists.

He's always done it but it strikes me that as Scorsese looks at the end - it's on his mind a lot - & races to work as much as he can, he also seems to find more time to show up in person. His film? His friend's? One he loves? Sure, he'll come talk about it.

I'm not sure if it's osmosis or just natural but the Mexican cook at B&H has the personality of an old Jewish guy in the best sense (their shirts do say 'Challah, por favor')

Ran into Nan Goldin at the cinema last night

Don't know that I agree with my friend here. The historical sites are largely a mess. It's been left too long, & the NPS has been slashed. The worst people on earth will show up anyway, & others won't want to hang out with them / be in a police state/ get lectures from a king.

Pregnant sister, Federal employee, as good & honest a manager as you'll ever find, not even close to rich, fired by Musk for vibes
