A few of his books are available in America, but the one with this short story is only in the Caribbean. I managed to snag one of the two copies available online.

Anthony C Winkler, who wrote it based on his short story, is new to me. He's known as the Mark Twain of Jamaica. (Cedella Marley Booker chose him to ghostwrite her memoir.) He lived in Atlanta, where he delighted in making his patois so thick as to flummox Americans.

I run screaming from whimsy, trust me

It’s less ‘quirky’ than it sounds - it ends up being beautifully simple - the subtle script & the performances save it from whimsy

It's quietly terrifying - very of its time but also timeless, school was still like that when I went & surely is now

You're being reasonable. A lot of execs, critics etc. aren't.

I love silent movies. In theory it's always possible. But if you preclude dialogue or reduce it to mere functionality you rob yourself of color, texture, tools. The silent version of Sunset Boulevard wouldn't be half as interesting - it's the voiceover that drives tension.

Someday when an exec argues this to me I'm going to crack & tell them Hitchcock wrote Billy Wilder a fan letter after he saw The Apartment ('how beautifully made') not that it will matter

There is a school of thought that says the ideal movie is silent & dialogue should only serve what the camera can't show, which is ridiculous.

It was really weird. It was a sober, professional tribute to Crane's life. Then you could click a link, pay, and get the porn.

She'll feign injury or death. Then when the tourists come she'll say (in English) 'What are you looking at?' then try to steal their cameras - if successful she drops them on the roof.

Not long ago he was in person at Metrograph to discuss a new film by a filmmaker I'd never heard of - as I recall I don't even think he produced it, he just interviewed her

Informed that B&H was owned by Jews up to the past 20-25 years or so - it's now owned by an Egyptian Muslim and his Polish Catholic wife 🤷‍♂️

His challah dipped in a massive bowl of soup is one of the best meals in town, and tastes extra good when you're broke.
