Probably a good time to mention that unlike the TV shows you see, cops in real life are actually not that good at solving murders. They have actually gotten worse over time.

There's an outside chance that as the burden of proof actually approaches "reasonable doubt" in reality,... this is just a more realistic indication of how often murders are actually solvable.
Sometimes those clearance statistics don't even indicate conviction.
I was going to say, are we sure this is a sign of worsening police work? Or a change in policy towards a preference to let clearance rate drop instead of wrongful arrests?
And yet, we keep throwing more money at them. The only thing they are good at is extrajudicial killings and crowd control (if you want that crowd gassed and beaten).
What I get from this is not that today’s cops are worse at catching the guilty, but rather that cops in 1965 were more willing to convict the innocent.
I don't know, I think cops should be able to do better than a coin flip at catching killers. Especially a police force that has functionally limitless resources behind it
If you haven’t caught it already, @jerusalem.bsky.social ’s latest “Good On Paper” podcast touches on that, as well as a bunch of other good info regarding what we actually know about good policing practices:
