Newcastle are widely seen as a very aggressive team, but Bournemouth have committed the most fouls in the PL this season – 300. Newcastle have committed only 231, the third-fewest

It was a similar story last season: Bournemouth committed the most fouls in the PL (507) while Newcastle committed the fourth-fewest (285). Iraola’s Rayo Vallecano were in the top five for fouls committed in both of his seasons in LaLiga

Not only do Newcastle commit very few fouls, they are fouled a lot. Only Spurs have won more fouls this season than Newcastle’s 286, with their differential between fouls won and fouls committed (55) second only to Man City

In individual terms, Bruno is by far the most-fouled player in the PL. He has won 76 fouls, with Gordon second on 47. Between them, they account for 43% of the fouls Newcastle win. This is basically because those two are fouled regardless of whether Newcastle play well or poorly

Bruno holds onto the ball, so if Newcastle are winning, he will draw fouls to relieve pressure, but teams will also foul him to stop Newcastle playing when he is trying to create. Similarly, Gordon can win fouls by repeatedly beating his opponent, but he can also be kicked out of matches on occasion

So, Newcastle have no issue with winning fouls, but it can also be an indicator the game is not going their way – and the latter is especially likely to be the case when teams play as Bournemouth do
