Do you have a source for this? How does one measure empathy in such a way that we can be sure this is true?
As a child I read both my primary school and high school libraries back to front, and I believe that my empathy is "good", but it's difficult to quantify.
One of my early childhood memories is sitting in bed reading a Golden Book. I was too young to actually read but I read the illustrations and pretended.
Yes and it also sets you up to be a learner and reader in general. I've always thought we should encourage young men to read more fiction. It will pique their interest in art as well.
I'm autistic, read 1000s of books, I had to learn empathy by watching other people being empathetic and the reaction of those empathized with. It's also how I learned what a narcissist is.
Reading is great to hear about others' experiences. But empathy isn't natural for everyone.
I’m reading the Count of Monte Cristo at the moment. I wouldn’t put it in the same league with Faulkner, but it’s very enjoyable, and empathy abounds in the take.
I believe that trading in reading full coherent thoughts that put you in someone else's shoes for more than 13 second increments is where our problem lies society-wide. Not a lack of belief in magical thinking- an OVER reliance on magical thinking which doesn't require you put yourself in ANY shoes.
