When the best technology you have to accelerate particles is a leather thong and a guy with big shoulders, it's really hard to get precise mass measurements for the proton!
Nah, that's like dunking on cell theory because they're made of atoms. Atoms exist, we just found the subatomic particles they're made of, then the quarks that THOSE are made of. Then we'll find what the quarks are made of, then what that's made of, and so on until we end up at cheese or something.
In QFT atoms are a bound state (though too complicated to calculate analytically). Alternatively, we’ve known atoms were divisible since well before QFT.
Vindication for Hippasus of Metapontum, the guy who proved the square root of 2 was irrational, because in doing so he proved atoms as they were then understood were impossible.
