I'm a fan of this on the allotment, I dump foliage in the wheelbarrow and then chop it with shears, then back on the bed, far easier than turning a compost! I use paths as an extension of the compost heap, trampling in foliage and periodically scraping up the top layer and dumping it onto the beds.

I do the same on mine and it works a treat doesn't it. I could call it being green, but maybe it's just laziness. Also keep all apple, currant etc prunings in a pile. Takes a while, but once they've dried and gone brittle break those up into small pieces and chuck those on as well.

My allotment is a 'mess'; partly cos I genuinely can't keep up with all I plan to do, partly I'm concerned for soil and insects, partly cos I'm changing horrid carpet paths to grass. One allotment neighbour waves his arms and shouts 'too much grass'! But, like you, I enjoy seeing 'what's going on'.
