We were just discussing this last night at my buddies while watching the game.
I had already started preparing myself for this outcome after we beat the Texans. If you find someone who can execute your offense at a high level, it's difficult to let them go.
Baker comp is perfect. I say this as a Bucs fan; guy was on the last stop to forever backup. Found an org that actually surrounded him with competency so he could thrive. Baker said it when he took his deal; being w the right org matters vs getting the absolute biggest deal. Darnold should get that.
assuming it will be like the Cousins negotiations the last couple years. They'll have a number they're comfortable with and if he's over it, they'll let him walk
I think there's an argument to be made that we trade JJ. Maybe I'm crazy but if we're going to pay Darnold I don't want it on a 1 year deal and if it's 3-5 years, why not get what we can for him asap?
It would be better for the Vikings if they instead chose the Aaron Rodgers plan. Hall of Fame performance, although you do have to read the fine print on the crazy bat shittery part.
Tag makes all the sense in the world. I wouldn’t even be that mad about it if I was Darnold. No other great options out there now and I’d rather put a second great year out there for the mega contract than take a 3-4 year Baker plus deal now.
While a tag certainly pays him well, there is something to be said for a team making a commitment to you. Especially when the Vikes invested a high pick in JJ. He could play great next year but due to other circumstance the Vikes could replace him mid year with JJ.
I don’t know. I’d trust KOC with just about anything at this point. If he wants to resurrect DJ or role with JJ I’m cool with it. I want the extra dollars going towards making the team baller.
I figure that will be a key part of the negotiation — either a one year tag, or the use of the tag as leverage for a longer deal.
I’m all for keeping Sam and giving JJ time to develop. Saw all sorts of people on Mina’s feed saying to trade him for a 2nd or 3rd. That makes no sense to me. Keep both.
I wonder if they will try to tag and trade cause they have zero picks. This is about 5th hand info at this point but they love JJ and I think there’s still a good chance he’s the starter next year if healthy.
Tagging him is a pretty big financial hit in terms of building a roster around a cheap rookie. Plus KOC has shown that he can make any QB competent, I'm rolling with JJ and an improved roster on both sides of the ball.
How likely is a franchise tag? I think they probably have too good a thing going to risk souring the relationship but it solves a lot of short term problems.

Look at Purdy and San Francisco.
Baker Mayfield's deal was $100M/3yrs w/$50 guaranteed, that's probably the best comp
I don't see how Mayfield is different, its almost an exact comp -- former 1st Rd QB takes discount to stay with quality org
Probably why I'm not a GM though.
Pay Darnold and he's going to suck again for sure.
Let him walk and he stays great and/or JJ sucks.
Tagging him seams like the least bad option
Either way I'm enjoying the ride for now. This year has been unexpectedly great.
Darnold is only 27.
I have no idea what the right price is, how many years, or how to structure the cap impact.
I do trust that Kwesi will figure it out though.
