I think there are two things here:
1) Yes, men can overcome this by simply refusing to be affected by society's shallowness and expectations.
2) That's also true of women and (e.g.) eating disorders.
I think consistency demands empathy in both cases.

I'll attract fire today and say that women (at least in my experience) seem a little less aware when they're being shallow than men, usually because it's less overtly harmful. But we should have the conversation with younger men especially that physical appearance isn't everything on all fronts.
