As someone who left his country because I disliked the regime (which has since indeed only became immeasurably worse), I disagree. It would have been next to impossible for my family to leave now, so I sincerely thank my younger self.

Braver people would stay and fight though (although that doesn't means 'going to rallies' and then back home, it means going to jail for 10-20 years), but knowing what the regime does is not in your name is also not nothing.

I'm not a fan of the whole "neoliberalism is bad" stuff. Don't think it's a helpful frame. But it is true that people have almost no sense of duty and public obligation anymore. It's taken as given that doing what's good for yourself and your family is overriding of all other possible obligations.

Totally. So much extremist ideology ("off-grid" living, homeschooling, restrictive gender roles, etc) takes the form of keeping people isolated from markets and civil society -- institutions that give them agency -- and under the thumb of petty tyrants.
