Is it right to take away that newer talents should be auditioning early and often as possible? 'No role too small' kind of mentality? I'm working on my VO portfolio and haven't auditioned yet, because I didn't know if I should be picky or just throw spaghetti at the wall of everything I can do.

For example, an actor could easily make more money by being a regular “utility player” that gets called in to record games every week than if they booked one big anime role every two years. (This is in regards to the work itself not counting external variables like autograph signings etc)

Also, because actors primarily get paid by the number of hours worked, you’re generally making the same amount by going in for 2 hours to cover random NPCs on a mobile game as you are going in for 2 hours as player dialogue in a big JRPG, etc 🙂 Be grateful for opportunities big or small!

Can a lead and/or a popular project help put you on casting’s radar? Certainly! But so can consistently turning in good auditions & working independently to improve your skills as an actor. You want them to call you in regularly because they know you can do the job & do it well.

As someone who loves random NPCs in games I support more of them getting voices. And it can be fun hearing someone you know appear as a small role somewhere! It's like a cameo. I hope NPC VAs know I appreciate them

Its all about Networking and marketing. Who knows whom and in what kind of networks you gain access to. If done correctly, then the sky is the limit. If not, you can be the next Marlon Brando, you will not make it.
