In the 19th century "Invasion Fiction" was very popular, there were lots of books about "What if Germany invaded Britain" or "What if the Chinese invaded America" (the latter of which sort of gave rise to Buck Rogers). "The War of the Worlds" was a unique sci-fi twist; "what if ALIENS invaded".
