My issues with eggplant are thankfully digestive rather than anaphylactic. But also eggplant is conveniently something that they rarely put in something without telling you. Onion, garlic, peppers (either bell or hot), or mushrooms are much more like to show up unannounced.
Yeah, my reactions haven't progressed to anaphylactic yet (just multiple other whole body systemic reactions), but we are trying very, very hard to keep them from getting that far and that involves avoiding sensitization exposures as much as possible
oh dear, I'm sorry. Here they ASK if you want mushrooms but that's because India has, uh, interesting definitions when it comes to various TYPES of vegetarianism.
I am viciously fucking allergic to them to the point where the last time I ate something that had been plated NEXT to a mushroom it was a five week long flare that took multiple rounds of prednisone to treat but thanks for your cutesy dismissal
I agree that they are yummy, but 1) they trigger Rah's MCAS and 2) the fungus kingdom is closer to the animal kingdom than the plant kingdom. Under no circumstances should they be considered a vegetable!
😬 I’m really hoping you discovered this before eating. If not, I’m really hoping your antihistamines are strong and swift and this does not trigger a massive flare🤞
thank fucking god, yes, one of them was on the top of the takeout container and I hadn't already ladled anything onto the rice or naan, which was my dinner
I am mostly just annoyed at myself for not calling ahead and just thinking "nothing else I have ordered from this restaurant for 15 years has had mushrooms in it and they're not listed in the description, it's probably safe"
This reminds me, you've probably talked about this before, but do we think IBS and the need for a FODMAP diet are/can be related to mast cell stuff? (Because mushrooms are definitely one of the things that come up there.)
more like "the one fucking time I don't call the restaurant to see if the thing I am violently allergic to is in this new-to-me dish because I have literally never seen it in a single other dish we have ever ordered from this restaurant over the 15 years we have lived here they serve me my allergen"
That is reasonably super frustrating but IME, colloquially mushrooms are often categorized as “a vegetable” for culinary purposes. Kinda like how tomatoes are technically a fruit but if someone says “vegetables” and there’s a tomato in the mix people largely just nod along.
(By which I only mean, I’ve seen several instances of restaurants listing something as “vegetable” on the menu and it includes mushrooms — so counting on things labeled “vegetable” to not have mushrooms in them is probably broadly unreliable. And I’m sorry that the ambiguity bit you today!)
(….blaaah, that also sounds more judgy than I mean to be. You haven’t been unreasonable! Just. That’s definitely not the only restaurant with similar lack of mushroom transparency about “vegetable” dishes)
Yes, you are indeed coming off more than a little bit victim blamey there. I am EXTREMELY AWARE that surprise!mushrooms in a "vegetable" dish is a thing but, as I said, we have been ordering from them for FIFTEEN YEARS and in that time no other person's "vegetable" dish has contained mushrooms

😡
That sucks.
I'm glad you managed to not eat the little bugger. (No, AutoCorrupt, not nugget. I wrote what I wrote.)
