A King County infant is the first confirmed measles case in Washington state in 2025. If you were at the Bellevue Square Apple Store between 6 and 9 p.m. on Feb. 20, you may have been exposed.

Yeah. Seeing this provoked my wife and I to set up mmr shots for tomorrow.
We *might* still be protected from childhood vaccines, but we really don't wanna fuck around.
Seeing a confirmed case here just increased the urgency.

Got Tdap a decade or so ago when there was an outbreak of pertussis in northern California. Apparently immunity from those vaccines can wane in adults, and a ~50yo friend got it in spite of having had her shots as a kid, and strongly recommended not getting whooping cough.

Yeah, until the switch to the acellular pertussis vax in the late 90s, pertussis immunity lasted longer. These days the VE drops below 50% at ~4.5 years, so it's a good idea to get Tdap instead of Td, and every 5 years instead of every 10.

I got to get an MMR booster in 2014 thanks to an unvaccinated Marin County student going to India. That shit HURT but I was happy for it all the same.

That is also when I learned that UC Berkeley is a “sentinel school” which the CDC watches for potential outbreaks.

Not only are there a lot of unvaccinated kids there, they cluster together at specific schools which is very convenient for transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Some of them even have parents who are happy their kids will have the "opportunity" to acquire measles immunity naturally.

No, if your titers are strong in adulthood you're good with just getting them checked every 15-20 years! Mine are from 2016 and I'm cool with that

Titer tests and MMR shots both cost about $100-150 without insurance, and insurance would cover the shot without me having to get a doctor's recommendation or hassle them.

Also, my wife was one of the few boomers who didn't get measles as a kid (neither of us had rubella, mumps was hard to tell.)

AAAAARRGGGHH Thank you for keeping an eye out, rah. Much more worried about this than some other things now. Specialist did the paperwork but nurse is out, so last I checked lab didn't have paperwork yet. :(

So many people have the mumps immunity wear off in adulthood! It's why a lot of colleges require or strongly recommend a third shot if you're going to be in the dorms

And for us old people who got the diseases before the vax was available, the main diagnostic for mumps was
"eh, your glands are swollen, might be mumps, might be some other infection. Have some penicillin just in case it's bacterial",
so I don't know if I had it or not.

I'm an example of why. I turned out to test negative for measles antibodies. I had been walking around unprotected for decades. Fixed that promptly.

Born in the 70s, had titer testing done that showed I'm no longer immune to measles or mumps. (So I got MMR a couple weeks ago. Do you know if I need two shots or is one good enough? Doctor seemed to think one but also seemed unsure.)

I am reasonably positive the recommendation is for people who have lost immunity to one component is two shots, wait ~6 months, then run titers again to see if they took or you're a non-responder

Also born in 70s. In UK, I got MMR last year and my GP was clear that it was a 2 step process. A few weeks apart. When I got first MMR the nurse also made sure I was booked for my second shot.

For whatever value my one datapoint is!
