I would like to suggest that “people owe at least $220 billion in medical debt” be reframed as “the insurance industry has demanded at least $220 billion in profits” since that’s what the money is once it transfers hands.

Might as well put it in a pile and set fire to it.
And it's all pure profit.
They’ve created regional monopolies to extract the maximum amount of “flesh” from their patients while cutting quality, access, and colleague pay.
Obviously some percentage is uninsured people who run up medical bills.
But a large percentage is likely people whose claims were denied for various specious or deceptive reasons.
