I dunno. There are headwinds and there are absolute times when your point is true. However, in my view and experience, there are other times when a choice can be made. I prefer not to be waterboarded for saying so, if that's ok with you?

Through my own experiences I've learned to eke out a lot more happiness from life by not forcing it, by making time for the necessity of other emotions. And psychological research shows that telling people with depression variations of "happiness is a choice" actually makes their situation worse.

Yeah, I've squeezed a whole lot of joy out of a very hard life, all considered. But I find it easier to be happy when I don't try and force myself to be when I'm hurting inside from very real issues.

I don't remember choosing existential dread, anxiety, and depression.

When I choose to do things to be happy, I'm still fighting a chemical imbalance and the state of the world we live in.

Yeah, so silly of me to let my childhood abuse cause me to sometimes not feel happy. Or to shake uncontrollably and vomit at certain triggers because it is so thoroughly embedded into my physical self it's inescapable.

It's all just a choice after all.
