In fairness, he has an epic few moments as a motel clerk in Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. A credit to his abilities that he remains memorable even among T Rexes, Steve Martin, and John Candy.
He weaseled out of it by saying Malcolm’s death *technically* wasn’t ever verified. But he also basically admitted he only wrote a sequel because Spielberg wanted to make another movie, and he couldn’t think of any ideas that didn’t revolve around Malcolm.
Fun fact: he’s an ex con turned actor. He played a criminal on Miami Vice and was asked to break into a warehouse. He did it was too easily and smoothly for an actor and admitted he did time for burglary.
